Licence Explainer

A Licence gives you a specific right to use a typeface. It defines how and where a font can be used. These rules are in the Licence Agreement.

Luzi Type strives to keep things fair and straightforward. That’s why all the licences last for an unlimited time, with no recurring fees, and are valid worldwide.

When you purchase a licence, you gain the right to use a font, not the font itself. An individual, organisation, or company always hold a licence. This entity is called the Licence Holder. The Licence Holder stays the same and cannot be changed. For more information about the Licence Holder, please review this summary.

Luzi Type offers three kinds of licences:Desktop Licence, Web Licence, and App Licence. You can download the complete Licence Agreements → .

Desktop Licence

A Desktop Licence allows production, office, and social media usage. With this licence, you can use a typeface on your computer in programs like Microsoft Word, Adobe Illustrator, or Figma. You can create pixel and vector images and videos, and share them without limitations. You can make this output for yourself and for others without any restrictions.

Here is a list of what you can do with a Desktop Font:
– Design unlimited output for yourself and others
– Unlimited production and distribution of logotypes
– Unlimited production and distribution of images
– Unlimited production and distribution of PDFs and ePubs
– Unlimited production and distribution of videos and movies
– Unlimited production and distribution of all kinds of print products
– Unlimited production and distribution of any 3D objects
– Unlimited production and distribution of any outdoor advertising
– Unlimited production and distribution of TV shows and TV ads
– Convert to outlines and change forms (e.g., in Illustrator)

A desktop font can only be used by you. You can make designs with the desktop font for others, like designing business cards for a client. However, you cannot share the font file with others, such as customers or contractors. If your client likes to use the fonts on their computers, such as in programs like MS Word, they will need to purchase their own Desktop Licence. You can help your client buy a Desktop Licence. → Here is how.

Desktop Licence + Contractor

Are you an organisation with contractors working for you?

The Contractor Extension allows you to provide your Desktop Fonts to contractors, such as design agencies or freelance designers, who are working on projects for your organisation.

Contractors can only use the fonts to create things like your company’s logos and marketing materials. This setup is for businesses that hold the Desktop Licence and hire designers for their brand.

As the Licence Holder, you can’t provide the fonts to contractors for projects outside your company, like client work. For example, a design agency can’t buy the Contractor Extension and let contractors use it to design for multiple clients.

Make sure the fonts are installed only on the number of computers listed on your receipt, including both your computers and the contractors’ combined.

Before giving the fonts to contractors, they must agree in writing to the terms. Keep this record for three years after the collaboration ends. Once their work with you is done, they need to delete the fonts. It’s your job to ensure that contractors follow these rules, so please make sure they fully understand the terms.

You can purchase this Contractor Extension on the shop’s checkout page. Get the complete Desktop Licence Agreement + Contractors → .

Web Licence

The Web Licence allows you to use the typeface on your website.

The cost of a Web Licence is based on the number of monthly page views. A single page view is one request to display a page of your website. The total monthly page views include all requests made to your websites over the past month. More information about page views is available in the notes entry → here.

You can use your Web Licence for an unlimited number of domains owned by your organisation (like www.name.com), as long as your licence covers the total number of page views across all your usage.

If, after purchase, your websites receive more page views than the number listed on your invoice, you need to upgrade your Web Licence. We only charge the extra cost to bring you up to the next page view level.

If your website generates documents (like PDFs), you need to purchase an additional Desktop Licence (your website counts as one computer).

Besides use on your website, you can also use the Web Fonts in dynamic web-based advertising (HTML5 Ads) and email marketing, as long as your licence covers the total number of monthly page views across all your usage.

A developer can help build your website. This developer can upload the web font to a non-public server, such as a private GitHub repository, and create the website in this environment. You can help your client purchase a Web Licence. → Here is how.

App Licence

With an App Licence, you can embed app fonts in applications like Android or iOS apps. One licence covers a single app that works across multiple operating systems (e.g., for iOS, Android, and Windows).

The App Licence has no download or time limits. In other words, if you want to build an app, buy an App Licence.

An app developer can help build your app. This developer can upload the app font to a non-public server, such as a private GitHub repository, and make the app in this environment. You can help your client purchase an App Licence. → Here is how.
